popular movies of 2016

With just days left before we turn another page in the calendar, here’s a look back at the year’s popular movies among the Nepali audience.

This year marked the change in movie watching culture among audiences in Nepal. For the first time, Nepali movies created more buzz than the Bollywood movies among the audience. Movies like ‘White Sun’ and ‘Kalo Pothi’ made history being screened at International festivals. Few movies broke all the box office records and created history whereas few were big disappointments. Anyway, from multiplex to art theaters, the Nepali filmgoers were blessed with a bounty of great offerings in 2016.

(Note: Movie like White Sun aren’t placed higher on this list as we are talking about the buzz creating movies in the country this year, not the best movies.)

10. Gajalu
Anmol K.C might be the most polarizing figure among audiences in Nepalese Industry right now. Like him or hate him, one appreciable thing he has done is captivate Nepali audiences to watch Nepali movies again.  Gajalu, featuring him and former Miss Nepal Shristi Shrestha, became the first Nepali movie to be screened in Cineworld. The movie depicts the life of the living goddess after retirement.

Deepak Runiyar directorial White Sun (Seto Surya) BECAME the first Nepali movie to win the Best Film award at the 27th Singapore International Film Festival. Critically acclaimed by Hollywood magazines,  it became the second Nepali movie after ‘Kalo Pothi’ to be premiered at the Venice festival and Toronto festival. Starring Dayahang Rai and Rabindra Bariyar, this movie is a cult classic and one of the best Nepali movies I have ever watched.

8. Suicide squad
Hollywood action movies have been always the center of attraction for Nepalese audiences. All hell broke loose when DC movies decided to make a movie featuring their favorite comic characters like Deadshot, Harley Quinn, and the most popular supervillain Joker. However, the movie turned out to be a disaster and fans were upset about Jared Leto’s Joker being given less screen time. Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn was the only good thing in the movie.`

7. Pashupati Prasad
Khagendra Lamichhane starter ‘Pashupati Prasad’ was one of the biggest super hits of the year,  grossing a margin of  Rs. 5.5 crore at the box office. The social satirical movie was in the nomination list for Nepalese entry for the best foreign-language film at the 89th Academy Awards where Kalo Pothi was selected.

6. Doctor Strange
This movie needs no explanation why it’s popular in Nepal. A huge crowd was present to watch the shooting of the movie in Lalitpur and have a glimpse of popular Hollywood s actor Benedict Cumberbatch, popular as Sherlock holmes. And, Nepalese audiences were lured to cinemas to watch the scenes of Nepal in the movie.

5. Captain America: Civil war
In a country where most of the people are Batman and DC comics fans, this marvel movie became very popular among Nepali audiences. Why wouldn’t it be? It’s Captain America VS Iron Man. And, the movie didn’t disappoint either. But one character that we couldn’t stop talking was the return of our favorite neighborhood Spiderman. Many of the DC fans in the world, including Nepal, watched the movie just to see their childhood favorite superhero back on screen.

Salman Khan fan base in Nepal is unquestionable. The movie became so viral that it’ broke the box office record set by Nepali movie Kohinoor in just 18 days. There was a rumor that  Gopi Krishna Hall had agreed a deal of 3 crores for distribution of this movie.

3. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Official Final Trailer
Batman craze is all over the world and Nepal is no exception. And when Batman vs Superman was announced,  this movie was the most anticipated movie of 2016. This first-day show was booked in QFX’s faster than any movie ever in the history.  However, this movie turned out to be the biggest disappointment of the year, breaking hearts of audiences.

This award-winning movie is the first Nepali film to be screened at Venice film festivals. Directed by Min Bahadur Bham, this movie was selected as the Nepalese entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at 89th Academy Awards. Like White Sun, this is a must watch movie for those criticizers who lament on the bad storyline of Nepalese movies.

Before going to No. 1, here are some honorable mentions: Dangal (Released in late December, so excluded from the list).  Dear Zindagi, Dreams, Jaatra, Finding Dory)

Without any doubt, this movie deserves to be no 1 on this list. With over Rs. 25 crore this movie went on to become the Highest grossing Nepali movie ever. This  Nepalese comedy film directed and produced by Deepa Shree Niraula featured many comedy stars from Nepalese television. Not only that, this movie has recently celebrated its’s 100day mark on QFX as well.
