It’s December, which means it is that time of the year where you get to see internet flooded with Best of 2016 lists. With so many lists out there, here is a particular list of Top 10 popular songs of 2016 which were able to get a space in your playlist, make you groove in your favorite club and play it on loop. So, here we rounded up the Top 10 popular songs we could find, smashed ’em together, and spit out for the year’s best. You’re welcome.

Bollywood music has always had its influence on Nepali people. With Bollywood movies being screened all over Nepal, its influence seems to be never ending and that is why this song “Tere Sang Yara” from a Bollywood movie ‘Rustom’ is here in the top 10 list of popular songs of 2016. Beautiful music composed by Arko Mukherjee and wonderfully sung by Pakistani singer Atif Aslam, this song is most probably the song you’re humming this year.

For around a year and a half, Bipul Chhetri’s music has been every Nepali’s favorite. Use of traditional instruments in his compositions and originality has been the prime factors of his success. “Junkeri” is a song from Bipul Chhetri’s new album of 2016 ‘Maya’ and is popular among every Nepali music lovers. So, here we place Junkeri in number 8 position.

‘The Breakup Song’, though the name suggests being a sad song, is a party anthem of Bollywood this year. The song, written by Amitabh Bhattacharya and composed by Pritam is sung by Bollywood’s famous singer Arijit Singh and others. Since the movie was released a while back, the charm of the song is still in the head of funky song lovers.

Previously, it was ‘Udhreko Choli’ and this time it’s ‘Thamel Bazar’. Nischal Basnet always comes up with witty and hit songs from his movie. ‘Thamel Bazar’ is the first song from the most awaited sequel of ‘LOOT’ i.e ‘LOOT2’ and since the very first day of its release (0ctober 21), the song has been making noises all around the country. From being played at local bars, restaurants, pubs to cover videos on Youtube, the song’s popularity is growing day by day. Composed and sung by Kali Prasad Baskota, this song makes to the number 6 in our list.

‘Purba Paschim Rail’ is the song from the most successful movie of 2016 and all time as a whole. Released on May 28 on YouTube, the song is composed and sung by Rajan Raj Shiwakoti along with Anju Pant. From being played on local buses to performances in school programs and Deusi Bhailo program, the song gained wide popularity all over Nepal.

Sia’s ‘Cheap Thrills’ had to be on this list, anyhow. Undoubtedly one of the most popular songs of 2016, this song also made noises in K-town with everyone grooving and dancing to its beats. Well, we can say Nepali don’t need dollar bills to have fun. *winks*

Quirky and foot tapping music, witty lyrics and Almoda’s singing makes ‘Funtastic Pani Paryo’ the hit song that it is now. One of the most popular songs of the year, ‘Funtastic Pani Paryo’ is undoubtedly the best song Almoda has released till date. Controversy between singer Almoda and YouTube dance group Cartoonz Crew also fueled up the popularity of this song.

Composed, written and sung by Kali Prasad Baskota, ‘Nira Jaile Risaune’ is the song from Nepali movie ‘Purano Dunga’. Though the movie didn’t do well as expected but the song was a major hit of the year and was highly loved and praised by everyone in Nepal. ‘Nira Jaile Risaune’ grabs second position in our list.

You knew this already, didn’t you? Well people, ‘Closer’ is the most popular and successful song of 2016 and not only here in Nepal but worldwide. Released on July 29, this Chainsmokers’ song rapidly gained its popularity and reached the every success of height. Easily the best song of the year and party anthem for all party animals, ‘Closer’ won heart of everyone all around the world and this is why I believe it deserves the number 1 position.
